Migrate from Linear to PlanMagnet
Keep Linear's speed, add the product-management layer it leaves out.
Linear is the fast, keyboard-driven issue tracker built for high-performing software teams — deliberately minimal, with cycles and a lightweight Linear Plan for roadmapping, but no feedback inbox, spec editor, or versioned releases.
Why teams on Linear move
Grounded in what is actually shipped today — not a wish list.
PlanMagnet adds the product-management surface Linear skips: a shipped feedback inbox with voting and priority scoring, plus versioned releases. A spec editor and OKRs are on PlanMagnet's roadmap.
Portfolio, program, risk-register, quality-gate, budget, and time-tracking layers for multi-team delivery ship in the same workspace — beyond Linear's engineering-only scope.
The same one-click importer that pulls from Linear also handles Jira, Asana, GitHub, and Trello, so consolidating several trackers into one workspace is a single guided process.
Governance is inherited from the Burdenoff platform and ships from the Free tier — RBAC, single sign-on and SCIM directory sync, and audit history — rather than something to configure feature-by-feature as Linear's compliance depth is limited to SOC 2, US-hosted.
What maps where
How Linear concepts land in PlanMagnet during the import.
| In Linear | In PlanMagnet | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Issues | Issues | Issues, priorities, and labels come across with the guided importer. |
| Labels | Custom fields / labels | Labels map onto PlanMagnet's custom fields so filtering and workflow stay intact. |
| Cycles | Sprints | Cycles map onto PlanMagnet sprints, including story points and tracked velocity. |
| Projects | Projects | Linear projects import as PlanMagnet projects, keeping issues grouped the way your team already works. |
| Sub-issues | Dependencies | Parent/child issue links carry over as dependencies between issues. |
| Teams | Boards | Each Linear team's issue list becomes a board with its own columns and swimlanes. |
| Comments & history | Comments, files, audit history | Migrated where feasible, alongside field, status, and workflow mapping. |
How the migration works
The same guided process for every supported tool, including Linear.
- 1
Connect your account
The guided importer authenticates against your existing workspace and reads your projects and issues — no CSV wrangling to start.
- 2
Map fields, statuses, and workflows
Field, status, and workflow mapping runs into the PlanMagnet model before anything moves, so issue types, custom fields, and board states land somewhere sensible.
- 3
Pull in issues, comments, and history
Issue, comment, attachment, and history migration runs where feasible, so context is not left behind in the old tool.
- 4
Run a parallel validation
A parallel-run validation lets both systems operate side by side so your team can confirm the migration before anyone fully cuts over.
- 5
Cut over — and keep an exit door open
A reversible cutover plan and team handover with runbooks close out the move; the same sync can export data back out if you ever need to.
Linear migration FAQ
Will our cycle data become sprint data?
Yes — Linear cycles map onto PlanMagnet's native sprints, which ship with story points and tracked velocity (burndown charting is still on the roadmap).
Is switching from Linear reversible?
Yes. The same built-in sync handles both import and export for Linear, so you can move data back out if PlanMagnet is not the right fit.
What does PlanMagnet add that Linear does not have?
A built-in feedback inbox with voting and priority scoring, and versioned releases — both shipped today — plus a delivery-ops suite (portfolios, programs, risk register, quality gates, budgets, time tracking) in the same workspace. A spec editor and OKRs are on PlanMagnet's roadmap, not shipped yet.
Do we keep Linear's AI triage features?
No — Linear Agent and Triage Intelligence are Linear-specific and do not migrate. PlanMagnet's own scoped AI assistance (ticket drafting, summaries, forecasting, at-risk flagging) is on the roadmap, not shipped yet, so plan for that gap explicitly.
Migrating from somewhere else?
